The Brockport Auxiliary Service Corporation (BASC) announced proposed changes to several campus buildings including the Seymour Union, Harrison Dining Hall and Brockway Dining Hall in the Fall 2025; but as a response to student pushback, those plans have changed.
In an email sent out to students on March 10, the Division of Administration and Finance outlined the updates BASC will be bringing to the SUNY Brockport campus. The plans include the relocation of the campus store, a new retail dining space and dining hall in the Union and the renovation of Harrison Dining Hall.
When BASC first proposed changes in 2025, they suggested transforming the Union Gallery into the new campus bookstore. At the time, 25 percent of students surveyed expressed they wanted the Union to stay the same. Brockport Student Government (BSG) senators highlighted its importance as a third space at a forum between BASC, BSG and students in November.
“After listening to significant concerns voiced by Brockport Student Government leaders, the Gallery space will be preserved and will continue to be available student programming space,” the recent email stated.
The Campus Store will instead be moved into the lobby of the SERC, a space currently occupied by the ticket booth and storage area. The reconstruction of this area is tentatively scheduled for the 2026-27 winter break, with completion by the end of the spring 2027 semester.
The new retail dining space in the Union will replace the space currently occupied by the Campus Store and Jitterbugs Cafe. In a survey distributed to students, BASC looked for student input on possible diningoptions. The survey asked students their status (residential student, townhome resident, off-campus commuter, faculty, staff) and their favorite off-campus eatery, as well as the food options they’d like in a “new quick service eatery” and the style of seating they’d like to see in this new space. The survey window concluded on March 29. The construction is tentatively planned for summer 2027, with a planned opening date in spring 2028.
The dining hall in the Seymour Union will take the place of The Square. The email says the “new dining hall will in response to student demand—serve dinner Monday through Thursday.” The venue will also be open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Friday. The email says the seating area for this new dining hall will remain available for people to gather or study after the dining service has closed for the day.
Additionally, BASC is considering refreshing the Fireside Lounge to “provide additional flexible space in the Union.” The work on the new dining hall is planned for the spring and summer of 2028, with plans to open in the fall 2028 semester.
Attached to the March 10 email were renderings of the updated Harrison Dining Hall, which is receiving upgrades to add a new station “which will result in more variety, and other facility updates [that] will ease traffic flow and congestion,” according to the email. The renovation is planned to begin this summer with parts of the construction continuing into the academic year. Harrison Hall will remain in operation during the updates.
In addition to the emailed survey, BASC held a Food Fair on April 7 to gain more student feedback. Students were handed paper surveys that asked them about a variety of SUNY Brockport vendor’s products, including food and drinks. Students ranked the products individually on whether they would purchase the item. Surveys were handed back to BASC representatives.
While it’s unclear now the impact student feedback will have on the construction, the email from the Division of Administration and Finance said that BASC took campus stakeholders, “especially our students,” into account when changing the plans from Fall 2025.
