Brockport senior Megan Gerber earned the Women’s Flag Football team’s first-ever Empire 8 Co-Offensive Player of the Week award after recording 120 passing yards, 110 rushing yards, and four touchdowns in a 26-12 win over Russell Sage.
“Getting that first win made us feel like all the work we’ve been putting in at practice is finally paying off,” Gerber said. “It gave us a lot of motivation and fire going into conference play.”
Gerber says the award has pushed her harder and set a new standard for herself.
“It feels good. It sets my standard for the next game,” Gerber said. “I want more passing yards, more rushing yards, more touchdowns, and a bigger win.”
A key aspect of Gerber’s abilities is being a dual-threat quarterback. Running is the senior’s biggest asset, but she recognizes the value of her arm, especially when running lanes are closed.
It also helps the senior being a dual-sport athlete as well on the Brockport Women’s Soccer team. In the fall, Gerber posted an 11-goal, three-assist season for 25 points where she garnered an Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week and an All-Conference First Team nod.
“I know I can run, and I like to run with the ball, so I use that to my advantage,” Gerber said. “A lot of teams know I like to run, so they try to trap me in the pocket. If I can recognize that and adjust by throwing more, I think it will really elevate our offense.”
As the quarterback, Gerber leads both on and off the field. The senior is quick to acknowledge that her success is the team’s success, and that the award belongs to all of them, not just her.
“As a quarterback, people trust and rely on me. I can handle those responsibilities and unite the team,” Gerber said. “I wouldn’t be here without my teammates.”
Since then, the Golden Eagles fell in their inaugural home opener 21-13 but bounced back with a 31-6 victory over the weekend at Elmira.
Brockport sits with a 3-2 overall record and 2-1 in conference play for second in the Empire 8. The Golden Eagles look to keep the win streak alive hosting Hartwick College on Friday, April 10 at 4 p.m.
