A shooting at SUNY Morrisville on Monday had the campus in lockdown overnight. One victim, a 20-year-old male, who police say was not a student, was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the neck. The shooting occurred around 3:45 p.m. in a residence hall. The police called the shooting an “isolated dispute,” and that the greater Morrisville community was not in danger, though they are still searching for the suspect. As of this morning, the campus lockdown has been partially lifted, and classes resumed.
The shooting has sparked reflection on SUNY Brockport’s own active shooter policies.
“Run, hide, fight,” is the most common defense tactic used in active shooter or “aggressive deadly behavior” situations. Law enforcement officials advise people to try to evacuate the dangerous area as their first line of defense, hide or barricade the space if evacuation is not an option and as a last resort, fight. Brockport’s guidelines also highlight the importance of preparedness and prevention.
