Brockport senior and quarterback Megan Gerber has earned her second Empire 8 Flag Football Offensive Player of the Week. The senior recorded 259 passing yards, 362 rushing yards, and 10 total touchdowns in games against Hartwick and Russell Sage.
“It feels really good,” Gerber said. “After the first one, I told people I wanted another. I’m proud of myself and my team because I wouldn’t be able to do it without them.”
Gerber believes the team’s chemistry has improved as she has played with her teammates more after missing the preseason. Playing multiple roles has helped her build a relationship with her receivers and learn their tendencies on routes.
“Early on, our chemistry was a little off because I didn’t get much practice time with them,” Gerber explained. “Now I know the speed of our receivers and where to place the ball for each of them, and I know my teammates’ tendencies. That chemistry has made a big difference.”
The senior has also learned how rotating positions improved her ability to throw the ball and how changing quarterbacks with first year Madison Beardsley during the game can confuse the defense.
“Working on my throws and playing wide receiver has helped me understand the routes better and how they’re ran,” Gerber said. “Seeing both sides of it has definitely improved my passing. “I’ve also been playing some wide receiver, and we might rotate Maddie (Beardsley) in at quarterback, too. That unpredictability can really help us.”
With her second Empire 8 Offensive Player of the Week award and chemistry with her teammates continuing to grow, Gerber and Brockport head into the Empire 8 semifinals with momentum on their side.
