For the fifth time, Woody, Buzz, Jessie and the rest of the crew are making a comeback to the theaters. The iconic and beloved toys from the “Toy Story” franchise are returning once again. What sets this apart from the first four? The gang is now faced with a new challenge: toys vs. modern technology.
Pixar Animation Studios released the official trailer for “Toy Story 5” on February 19. The trailer features all of the toys we know and love: Tom Hanks returning to revive the role of Woody, alongside Tim Allen as Buzz Lightyear. While all the toys still belong to 8-year-old Bonnie, they are now competing for play time against a smart tablet. Voiced by Greta Lee, Lilypad the smart tablet is Bonnie’s new obsession, turning play time into screen-staring. The toys’ new mission is to bring back the use of toys and the style of play as they know it, and of course, win back Bonnie.
For more than three decades, the “Toy Story” franchise has followed the emotional journey of its characters while reflecting real-life experiences many viewers can relate to.
Previous films explored themes such as growing up, outgrowing childhood toys and the fear of being left behind. From Andy passing his toys on to Bonnie to the bittersweet goodbyes between characters, the series has consistently balanced humor with heartfelt moments.
The upcoming film appears ready to tackle another modern issue: children’s new current obsession with electronics. As tablets, smartphones and other digital devices become a regular part of childhood, Pixar seems to be tapping into a wave of nostalgia, trying to restore traditional play.
Directed by Andrew Stanton, co-directed by Kenna Harris and produced by Lindsey Collins, “Toy Story 5” is set to come to theaters this June, nearly seven years after “Toy Story 4” released in 2019.
Whether you are a fan of traditional play or you prefer to use what modern technology has to offer, you always got a friend in Pixar’s beloved toy crew.
