Brockport Golden Eagles junior goaltender David Filak was named Empire 8 Goaltender of the Week following a career high 55 saves in a historic 3-2 win over the tenth ranked team in Division III, the Geneseo Ice Knights this past Friday, Feb. 20.

“You know I just have been playing the same game for 20 years now, so it’s just about doing the same things and doing all the little details,” Filak said.

The junior goaltender was tested early and often but saved his best for last. Coming into the third period Filak had 34 saves, throughout the third Geneseo generated numerous chances but Filak stayed strong racking up 21 saves in the final 20 minutes of play.

“You just enter in that flow state,” Filak said. “I guess you can say just one shot goes and another one comes just repetition.”

Filak has had a career year in net for the green and gold. The junior has started 17 games (a new career high) and garnered the most saves in a season with 449. To go along with that Filak averages the fifth most saves per game in the UCHC, he’s fourth in the UCHC in save percentage with a .916 (also a career high) and most importantly; Brockport is 7-7 when Filak is in net.

“I always thought I belonged here,” Filak said. “It is just about waiting your turn and capitalizing on the opportunities that are in front of you.”

The Golden Eagles travel to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to take on the Chatam Cougars Wednesday Feb. 25 for their opening round of UCHC playoffs. Both teams know each other from UCHC play as Brockport took four out of six possible points from them earlier in the season. Brockport led the game 4-2 back on Nov. 14 but ultimately lost 5-4 in overtime. The Golden Eagles came back the next day behind Filak’s 25 saves and got a gutsy 2-1 win over the 15th ranked Chatam Courgars.

As Brockport’s playoff journey starts Wednesday, the team is confident they can go in any place and win after beating Geneseo.

“As a team we just got to do what we did this past weekend again. Back to buying in, attention to detail, and doing all the little things correctly. And for me it is just stop the puck. One shot comes another goes that’s how it goes,” Filak said.

Filak and the No. 6 Brockport Golden Eagles travel to No. 3 Chatham for the opening round of the UCHC playoffs on Wednesday, Feb. 25. Puck drop is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
