New York State is experiencing a second surge in COVID-19 cases, pushing leaders to take action in preventing further spread of the virus.
Monroe County has seen a drastic spike in cases, with a current running 7-day rolling average of 237 new cases per day. Many of the individuals who are testing positive have been in their twenties and below, leading some local colleges to move to remote-learning before Thanksgiving break.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo enacted yellow zone restrictions in parts of Monroe County on Nov. 9.
The impacted areas are ones who are seeing microclusters with exceptionally high COVID-19 positivity rates. These include the City of Rochester, Irondequoit, Greece, Webster, Penfield, Perinton, East Rochester, Pittsford, Brighton, Henrietta, Chili and Gates.
The yellow zone restrictions initially included a maximum of 25 people for gatherings, four people at a table for dining, schools testing 25%, and bars and restaurants to close at midnight. Just after these yellow zone restrictions were announced, Gov. Cuomo announced even more restrictions for the entire state.
Gyms, bars and restaurants in the state must now close at 10 p.m. Indoor and outdoor gatherings at private residences will be limited to ten people.
These new rules went into effect statewide on Friday, Nov. 13. You can view an interactive Monroe County COVID-19 dashboard here.
