Brockport volleyball’s Alexis Sison was named Empire 8 Women’s Volleyball Co-Player of the Week following a strong weekend at the Oswego State Invitational, the league announced Monday. Sison totalled 39 kills and 42 digs through 12 sets, while adding three aces and three block assists.
“Honestly, I was pretty shocked initially,” Sison said. “I knew we had a good weekend, but I didn’t really realize how impactful I was for my team. I am super honoured and grateful to be recognized.”
Going into the final matchups before conference play, Sison was focused on being the best player she could be.
“Going in knowing it was our last weekend before we start conference matches, we just wanted to go out confident in ourselves and the team,” Sison said. “My mindset was just to perform to the best of my abilities and really trust the training that we’ve been doing at practice.”
Sison’s confidence was on full display through a strong individual invitational performance. Although beginning 0-2 against Oswego and Western Connecticut State, Sison and company finished the weekend with wins over Canton, and a win with a season high of 16 kills, 18 digs, along with an ace and two block assists against Pitt-Bradford. After the weekend Sison now leads the Golden Eagles in kills.
Despite two losses on Friday, Sison describes how their overall comeback displays their potential prior to beginning conference play.
“I think Friday was a little rough for the team,” Sison said. “But coming back Saturday and fighting to win both games felt really good. This weekend showed us what our potential could be, and I think that right now we’re in a good position to start conference play.”
Sison credits their scouting reports prior to the matchups, and maintaining a strong bond of trust between teammates, for having a successful weekend.
“Before every game, we quickly went over what we learned in the scouting reports from throughout the week and made sure everyone was on the same page,” Sison said. “I think this weekend was mainly just trusting our training and teammates to be able to figure things out and get things done.”
Being named Co-Player of the Week has given a boost to Sison, while reminding her to continue working throughout the season.
“It really showed me that I can be more confident in my own skill and who I am on the court,” says Sison. “I also think it was a reminder to keep working hard and stay consistent.”
Now focused on the upcoming conference schedule, Sison recognizes that it will take a village to reach their season goals.
“Obviously, we want to win the Empire 8,” Sison said. “But I just want to focus on each game one at a time. I’m very confident that we can make an Empire 8 championship happen, but it’s going to take everyone on the team to make it happen.”
The Golden Eagles finished 2-2 at the Oswego State Invitational, concluding their non-conference slate with a 7-6 record. Brockport will open conference play against St. John Fisher on Friday, Oct. 3rd at 6 p.m.
