The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards (VMA’s) lit up New York’s UBS Arena with a show that blended pop power, meaningful moments, and major star returns. While the VMAs have long been known for shock value, this year leaned into something deeper: legacy and impact.
Doja Cat opened the night with an electrifying ’80s-inspired set, complete with glowing visuals and a surprise sax solo from Kenny G. But it was Mariah Carey who delivered the night’s most talked-about moment—returning to the VMAs stage after 20 years to perform a medley of her hits before accepting the Video Vanguard Award. She gracefully acknowledged past snubs, adding a dash of classic Mariah shade.
Lady Gaga was the evening’s biggest winner, taking home four awards, including Artist of the Year and Best Collaboration with Bruno Mars. She dedicated her wins to her fiancé and fans saying,
“This isn’t about fame. It’s about fearlessness,” Gaga said.
Meanwhile, Ariana Grande claimed Video of the Year and issued a few thank you’s to a few specific groups.
“The gays, my therapist, and everyone who still believes in joy,” Grande said.
Breakout star Sabrina Carpenter used her performance of “Tears” to make a powerful statement for trans rights—surrounded by drag performers holding signs that read “Protect Trans Rights.” Carpenter also took home the Album of the Year award for Short n’ Sweet.
Rising artist Alex Warren earned the Best New Artist award, marking his transition from viral star to a serious music contender.
A standout tribute to the late Ozzy Osbourne brought together artists, Yungblud, Steven Tyler, Joe Perry, and Nuno Bettencourt. They sang raw, rock-driven homage that proved the VMAs still honor their musical roots.
Ricky Martin earned the first-ever Latin Icon Award, charming the crowd with a story about sewing his own pants backstage after a wardrobe malfunction.
Offstage, the fashion was just as loud—with Tyla, Rosalía, Ice Spice and Cardi B turning the after-parties into full-blown runway moments. In the end, it was the music and the messages behind it that made the 2025 VMAs a night to remember.
