Brockport’s Jaylah Cossin was named Empire 8 Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday for her seven-point performance this weekend in victories over Hilbert and Hartwick. Against Hartwick, Cossin scored two goals in the 3-0 win and against Hilbert she tallied another goal and an assist in the 3-0 win.
“Being named the E8 Offensive Player of the Week is really motivating and means a lot to me,” Cossin said. “It’s a great reminder to keep showing up and working hard for my team.”
Cossin was a 1st-team All-Region and 2nd-team All-SUNYAC selection last season and led the team in goals with 11. Having another great year, she currently leads the Empire 8 in goals with seven and points with 16. Head coach Mike Idland loves the growth he has seen from Cossin this season.
“Jaylah had an outstanding season in 2023,” Idland said. “She is playing the position in a much more mature, efficient way this time around. It’s counter to who she is as a person, but I’ve asked her to have a more ‘selfish’ mentality when making decisions on the ball, which, for a striker, just translates to taking on the responsibility to score that comes with the position, and she’s done that beautifully. She is also very coachable.”
Cossin credits her success this season to the work ethic of the team and is thankful for her teammates.
“My team has been a crucial part of any success I’ve had on the field this year,” Cossin said. “The level and intensity each of them brings to every game has pushed me to do the same. Each one of the girls is putting in the work to make this stuff happen. Any stat I’m putting up is a reflection of a whole team behind me putting in the work to get the job done. I couldn’t be more grateful for that.”
Brockport is just one of two teams in the nation to have not allowed a single goal. They are currently 8-0-1 on the season. Cossin credits this success to the buy-in and effort from the team.
“One of the keys to our success is that everyone on the team is committed,” Cossin said. “We have a big roster, and every single player is willing to put in the work, whether it’s in training or during games. It’s about showing up and giving 100%—in the small moments and the big ones. The coaching staff has been instrumental in preparing us, and each game teaches us something new, allowing us to grow and improve as the season goes.”
The Golden Eagles will look to extend their winning streak to eight games when they travel to Utica to take on SUNY Polytechnic Institute in an Empire 8 conference matchup on Saturday at 3 p.m.
