With one of the best starts in program history, the SUNY Brockport women’s soccer team continued their unbeaten streak in the Empire 8 conference after a 4-0 victory against Hartwick College on Saturday. The Golden Eagles entered the game with the record of 6-0-1. The team sits atop the Empire 8 table with nine points in three games.
Amelia Breton opened the scoring for Brockport in the 41st minute of the game. Jaylah Cossin scored a goal in the 45th minute assisted by Sierra Edwards. In the 55th minute of the game Lyndsey Miller scored from outside the box. Miller scored a brace in the 58th minute which was assisted by Cossin to give Brockport a 4-0 victory.
“I think our composure as a team overall has really helped us,” Miller said. “Even in the beginning where we had some slip-ups, I think we just really brought the energy, and we knew we had to get the job done and I think we did that.”
The Golden Eagles had 16 shots in the first half and limited Hartwick to only one shot attempt. In the second half the Golden Eagles had nine shot attempts and Hartwick had two.
“We switched formations, which I think allowed us to be more offensive, but we still stayed very strong defensively,” Miller said. “I got bumped up more into the midfield which gave me more opportunities to have shots on goal, and I think that translated very well.”
Holding things down in the back, goalkeeper Madeline McCrosson has started in all three conference games this season. McCrosson was named the Empire 8 Co-Defensive Player of the Week earlier this month. She played the full 90 minutes in the game against Hartwick and made two saves, both in the second half.
“I feel like it really shows the hard work the team puts in everyday at practice,” McCrosson said. “But it feels really good to be able to be back there and help out with these shutouts. We knew that it was going to be a difficult game. Coming in we wanted to be ready for anything. And I think that once we settled into the game and found the back of the net the first time, from that point on, it was our game, and we were able to go at them more while still holding our composure in the back.”
Brockport is one of only two teams in the country that has yet to concede any goals this season. This is the fourth time in the program’s history that the team has been undefeated through seven games, and this is the first time in program history the Golden Eagles have not conceded a goal in eight games.
“We just try to be very committed on every play…it’s almost a core value of ours not to give the team anything,” Brockport women’s soccer head coach Mike Idland said. “We make sure they try to break up the other team’s play as much as possible at kind of full intensity, and then see what the attacking part looks like from there. And that has kind of been the secret.”
Next up, Brockport will be on the road to face Houghton University on Oct. 2 in their fourth conference game.
