Brockport field hockey was shutout 2-0 as they took on the Ithaca Bombers Wednesday. After a dominant 8-0 win against SUNY Morrisville on Sunday which saw the Golden Eagles put up 55 shots, the offense was held to just two shots this game.
Despite the loss, Golden Eagle’s head coach Krista Archambeau was satisfied with how her team performed.
“That was the best 60 minutes that we collectively played,” Archambeau said. “We have things that we still want to clean up… but overall, I’m really happy with how we played.”
A scoreless first quarter saw Brockport get outshot 8-2. Ithaca had a chance to get on the board with just over a minute remaining when they put three straight shots on goal, all stopped by Brockport goalie Katelynn Banning.
“I felt really good,” Banning said. “It was a little frustrating… but I think having my team to uplift me was really helpful”
Banning was in goal for Brockport for the first time this season. Senior Ella Buchanan had played every minute of Brockport’s first five games. Banning allowed two goals and made seven saves on the night.
“She’s been working really hard in practice and really executing,” Archambeau said. “We wanted to see what she could do.”
The Bombers stayed aggressive early in the second period and cashed in as Ainsley Grant scored her first goal of the year. Juliana Valli was credited with her first assist of the year.
Ithaca scored their second goal nearly five minutes later when Natalie Descalso also picked up her first goal of the year. Brooke Snider collected her second assist of the season.
At the half Brockport found themselves in a 2-0 hole. A quiet second quarter for the Golden Eagles offensively, they were not able to get a shot off.
The Golden Eagles were again held shotless in the third quarter. Their defense was able to increase the pressure and held Ithaca to just two shots and no goals to keep the deficit at 2-0.
A third consecutive shotless quarter from Brockport took this game to the finish line. Final score: Bombers two, Golden Eagles zero.
Freshman Allison Greene had the only shot on goal on the night for Brockport. Through six games, she is leading the Golden Eagles in points and assists.
“I’ve been very impressed with Allie,” Archambeau said. “She’s a very hard worker, and she works just as hard in practice as she does in the game.”
With the loss, Brockport falls to an even 3-3 on the year. Ithaca improves to 5-2 with the win.
The Golden Eagles next game will be on Saturday against the Elmira Soaring Eagles (0-3). Start time is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
