It was a record-breaking Saturday at the Brockport Multi & Invitational Indoor Track and Field meet. The men’s team finished in second place out of 12 teams, and the women’s team ended the day in third. The day was made extra special for Jacob Miller and Nick Markle, who both set new program records.
edMiller shined in the men’s 400-meter event topping the program record for the second straight week. The sophomore finished in 48.57 seconds and in first place in the event. After not competing in the first few meets, Miller has made his presence known since returning to the track. In addition to his success in the 400m, Miller set another program record in the 300-meter dash on Jan. 26.
“My coach and I decided to focus on getting ready for our first meet in January,” Miller said. “He’s been very understanding and helpful in navigating some roadblocks we’ve had in the fall, but things are starting to piece together at the right time.”
For the first time in his career, Miller was named SUNYAC Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week, announced on Feb. 5. With his sights set on future success, Miller explained his long-term goals.
“I would like to see team success at SUNYACs,” Miller said. “Most important to me is putting myself in a good position to compete at the national level.”
Continuing Brockport’s success this weekend, Markle finished in third place in the men’s 600-meter, with a time of 1 minute, 23.82 seconds.
Despite his record-breaking finish, Markle didn’t put much thought into his performance beforehand.
“I didn’t really have a time in mind going into the race, I was just trying to win,” Markle said. “I realized that I didn’t have anything to lose, so I might as well try and go fast.”
Miller, Markle and the rest of the Golden Eagles will try to use this momentum and continue their successes this weekend. Brockport will be on the road with a group traveling to Boston University to compete in the David Hemery Invitational and others heading to Pennsylvania for the Riverhawk Friday Night Showdown at Susquehanna University.
