The Brockport Men’s Soccer team faced off against the undefeated Plattsburgh Cardinals on Golden Eagles’ Senior Day. The seniors honored before the game were forward Dylan Rippe and goalie Trevor Clarke. The Golden Eagles played the Cardinals to a 0-0 draw.
Coming off the heels of a great SUNYAC opener against Buffalo State the Golden Eagles were riding high heading into this matchup against undefeated Plattsburgh, where they looked good early.
In the first half of play, the Golden Eagles looked great with the defense not giving the Cardinals any opportunities to put shots on frame. That gave the Brockport offense numerous chances to get the ball in the net, but they failed to do so going into intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
The Golden Eagles riding off a great first half came out in the second half looking flat. Plattsburgh had seemed to flip the script on Brockport. The one thing that stayed consistent for the Golden Eagles was stellar defense. Goalie Andrew Taylor finished with a clean sheet with seven saves. But when it came down to it the Golden Eagles came up just short of victory.
Tensions were high throughout the match with both teams and the officials. There were four yellow cards today, two for each team. With a total of 24 fouls by both teams altogether, it was a gritty match that saw no winner.
Brockport Head Coach Gary LaPietra was a bit disappointed with his team’s second-half effort.
“The first half, we should have finished a couple more chances. They (Plattsburgh) played a much better second half. And we kind of played a little bit below our average in the second half. I’m a little disappointed there, but the work rate was there the effort was there but, you know, you got to capitalize on chances in the beginning of the game. That just grows confidence and you play so much better in the second half. So, we’re a little off in the second half today,“ LaPietra said.
Defender Malcolm Phillips admires the hard work his seniors bring day in and day out for the program.
“They come hard every single day to practice and make everybody work. So it’s a good thing that we have our seniors”, Phillips said.
This tie brings Brockport to (3-2-3). Next up the Golden Eagles will travel to Oswego for their third straight SUNYAC game with the game starting at 4 p.m.
