The Brockport women’s basketball team took down Plattsburgh State, winning by a score of 67-54. The Golden Eagles used a 22-7 opening quarter to build a lead that they never conceded. The win puts Brockport at 10-11 on the season and 7-7 in conference play. Head Coach Corinne Jones was pleased with her team’s early response.
“It says a lot about our team. We weren’t happy with the result last night and we were ready to bounce back,” Jones said. “We weren’t going to wait for a second quarter or a second half. I think it says a lot about our group and what we are trying to do.”
It was a complete team effort in the win as nine players recorded points while only Juan Brown broke double figures, finishing with 14. Brockport was aided by their efficiency from behind the arc, shooting 9-21 (42.9%) from distance to the Cardinals 6-27 (22.2%) effort. Jones credited extra work from her team in the improved shooting results.
“Our team came out really well. We stayed at shootaround and got [extra] shots up and it was clear that we did that,” Jones said. Stephanie [Jean-Baptiste] came out gunning and I think we followed her. I know she’s a freshman, but when someone steps up and makes a couple shots it can be really contagious. I thought that happened and she really set the tone to make it contagious for us today.”
Brockport guard Anna Lee thought the Golden Eagles resetting their mentality played into the win.
“I think last game we let our offense dictate our defense and it should be reversed, we need to let our defense dictate our offense,” Lee said. “We went into this game, and we were really heavy on the defensive side, and I think that led to our scoring.”
Jean-Baptiste finished with nine points in 19 minutes, battling foul trouble throughout the game. Zoe Zutes also scored nine while Anna Felice added eight points and seven assists. Lee chipped in seven points, three rebounds and three assists. Hali Lucia added five points, three rebounds, three assists, and five steals defensively.
With the win and a Potsdam loss, Brockport moved back into sole possession of fifth place in the SUNYAC standings. The Golden Eagles are now just one win away from clinching a postseason berth. Lee says they are taking it day by day for now.
“I think it’s important, but I think we’re more focused on our goals game by game,” Lee said. “If we continue to achieve those, we’ll be fine. We just have to continue to work hard and keep grinding.”
The Golden Eagles will next be in action on the road Friday, Feb. 10 against Oneonta.
