The SUNY Brockport volleyball team lost a tight match to St. John Fisher in five sets 3-2. After jumping out to an early 2-0 lead, the Golden Eagles were unable to finish it off, losing the next three sets. Brockport Interim Head Coach Kate Isaksen said the Cardinals adjusted well to the early deficit her team handed them.
“I think they were picking up on our shots that we’re doing, and we weren’t changing up different things,” Isaksen said. “Their defense was great, and they started picking up the tips we were doing. Their offense got going, the middles got hot, and we couldn’t find a way to stop them.”
The game was ‘Dig Pink Night for Breast Cancer Awareness.’ The team sold pink shirts for fans to wear at the contest and to help raise money while the players wore pink in warmups and on the sidelines. Nearly $2,000 was raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.
Myah Frostclapp led the way offensively for the Green and Gold, recording a season high and game high 17 kills and recording four blocks on her way to a 19-point night. Jordan Thompson contributed an all-around performance finishing with 11 kills, four aces, 14 digs and three blocks for a 17-point night.
All five sets were tightly contested throughout, and the final stats for both teams show it. The teams finished tied with 66 points in the contest, and the Golden Eagles outpaced the Cardinals in blocks (7-4), kills (54-52) and digs (101-98). St. John Fisher had more aces (10-5) and assists (51-50).
Heading toward the postseason, Coach Isaksen is focused on the team’s ability to finish.
“Finding a way to finish games and finish sets. We’ve done a good job getting out early but just finding a way to keep that consistent fight all the throughout the match,” Isaksen said.
Brockport’s record now sits at 18-6 overall on the season. The Golden Eagles will head into SUNYAC tournament play next week as the No. 2 seed and receive a first-round bye after their 8-1 record in conference. First, Brockport will close the regular season at the Carnegie Mellon Tri-Match where they will face off with Dennison University and Carnegie Mellon University.
