Brockport Women’s Soccer senior midfielder Megan Gerber was named the Empire 8 Women’s Soccer Offensive Player of the Week following a dominating week against Houghton and SUNY Poly. In a 4-0 rout of Houghton, she contributed one goal and two shots. In a strong 9-0 win over SUNY Poly, Gerber exploded for a hat trick with an assist, all within 33 minutes of play.
With Gerber leading the way, the Golden Eagles set a new single-game program record with 55 shots.
“I was extremely honored and grateful because I was happy to see the hard work pay off,” Gerber said. “I was happy that I had such a great support system from within, as well as my team congratulating me. As much as it was an individual award, it was also for the team.”
Gerber was overwhelmed with excitement following the announcement. She recalls her strong performance against SUNY Poly as one of her personal goals.
“The personal accomplishment excited me the most because I had a hat trick in the SUNY Poly game,” Gerber said. “That was a goal of mine to get over my four years when I came into Brockport as a freshman.”
Heading into the week, the senior recognized the importance of keeping her mindset consistent and continuing to hold herself to the highest of standards.
“Going into every game, the mindset is the same; you never know how the teams are going to come out,” Gerber said. “So, we always play to our highest standard. We knew we wanted to come out hard in both games, and that’s something I know I can control on the field. So, I make sure to bring that every game.”
Gerber was happy with her performance. She felt as though it gave her a boost to continue through future conference matchups.
“I’m very proud of myself and I’m excited to see how I can improve even more in future games,” Gerber said. “It shows that the hard work I’ve been putting in is paying off, and it motivates me to keep pushing. It also fuels our momentum as a team going into the rest of conference play, especially against tougher end-of-season opponents.”
With plenty of action on the pitch still ahead, Gerber is eyeing not only an Empire 8 Championship, but an appearance in the NCAA championship tournament after the Golden Eagles reached the tourney last year in its inaugural season of the Empire 8.
“Our team goals are to be the number one seed at the end of conference play,” Gerber said. “I am very confident in achieving that goal. Also, we want to win the Empire 8 Championship and make it to the NCAA tournament.”
The Golden Eagles sit atop the Empire 8 with a 9-0-3 record (7-0). Brockport looks ahead to take on the Alfred Saxons, one of five remaining games in the regular season.
