Brockport field hockey lost to No. 20 Geneseo Wednesday 5-2. This loss snapped the Golden Eagles nine-game win streak, and they are now 6-1 in Empire 8 conference play.
“I think we fought,” Brockport head coach Krista Archambeau said. “Geneseo is an incredible team. They’re ranked 20th. We have some things to clean up before we play again.”
Brockport got on the board first, scoring in the sixth minute. Quinn Guy scored her fourth goal of the season to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.
Brockport forward Emmalee Moore started the game and has been a key figure for Brockport this year, playing in 13 games and adding two assists.
“We came out really hungry,” Moore said. “The energy was just there, and we had the opportunity and we took it. [Guy] just saw the opportunity and took it, and it really brought us through the first half of the game.”
Not even 30 seconds later, Geneseo’s Katrina Clare would even the score, finding the back of the net for the Knights.
Geneseo would keep looking to pull ahead, putting pressure on Brockport’s defense. The Knights outshot Brockport 12-2 in the first period alone. Brockport goalkeeper Ella Buchanan was strong, making 19 saves in total.
With just over three minutes remaining in the quarter, Geneseo would finally finish a shot attempt, beating Buchanan to put the Knights up 2-1. Hailey Roethel was credited with the goal off an assist from Sam Lewis. After the goal, both teams finished the quarter playing strong defense, not allowing many shot attempts.
This would carry over to the second quarter, before Brockport would finally even the score. Kelsey Zehr would score off a penalty shot, beating Geneseo keeper Lilly Spitz. The rest of the half would be stop-and-start, with ten fouls committed between the two teams.
“We can score on them for a reason,” Moore said. “It’s because we work really hard in practice every day. We learn from everything we do.”
They ended the first half tied 2-2, but the second half was all Geneseo. The Knights immediately made their presence felt offensively, putting a shot on goal just 30 seconds in but was saved by Buchanan.
Five minutes later, Ada Roe scored for the Knights to make the score 3-2. Before the end of the quarter, Geneseo put five more shots on goal, all saved by Buchanan. Brockport did not register any shot attempts in the third quarter.
In the 49th minute it was Ella Greico scoring, putting the Knights up by two. Lewis was again credited with the assist.
The Golden Eagles were able to create some opportunities. Samantha Choate put a shot on goal in the 50th minute that was saved by Spitz. Brockport had two shot attempts in the quarter compared to Geneseo’s nine.
Roethel would score her second goal of the game with just under five minutes left to play, making the score 5-2 and sealing a Geneseo victory.
“Just need to come to practice tomorrow and prepare,” Archambeau said. “Every single loss we’ve had so far we’ve taken as a learning lesson and grown and have gotten better.”
Brockport will be at home Saturday to face Utica. The Empire 8 matchup is scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
