SUNY Brockport presented its first of two open-house events on Saturday, Oct. 19. The event saw hundreds of prospective students and their families come out to campus for a day full of different activities.
The day began in the Special Events and Recreation Center where students could get information from a range of organizations on campus and Student admission ambassadors were also present to answer any questions. After speeches from campus leadership, students spread out over campus for more individualized information and campus tours.
SUNY Brockport Assistant Director of Undergraduate Admissions Nina Smith oversees the organization of each Open House event and ensures that Brockport is a place where prospective students feel comfortable.
“I always say the community of Brockport is what makes us unique. It’s a very supportive community, especially the faculty and staff. It’s very welcoming, so I think if students are looking for that, a mid-sized school where it’s going to feel like home, this is always a great option for students to consider,” Smith said.
The multitude of resources available to students is one of the biggest parts of Open House.
“I hope that students get the information that they need from our student services, our faculty, from our different academic departments, our workshops and tours to feel confident in applying to Brockport,” Smith said.
SUNY Brockport has made history in the last two years with the 2027 and 2028 incoming freshmen being the biggest classes of students in 50 years and the school’s history respectively.
“I think we’re on a really good trajectory right now. There’s a lot of good energy on campus and our students feel that when they come to campus for events like this, or when they come for a tour. They can feel that the students are genuinely happy here, and the faculty and staff are happy here. I think it draws them to our campus which is really exciting,” Smith said.
Kayleigh Sims was one of the Prospective students who attended the Open House.
“It [Brockport] seems like a nice tight-knit community, I liked the size and location and it’s not too far from my house,” Sims said.
Sims was most interested in getting more information on her anticipated major, Criminal Justice and the specifics of living in the dorms.
Sims is looking forward to what the future holds.
“It feels like a good fit for me, [I’m looking forward to] meeting new people and having fun while focusing on my career,” Sims said.
SUNY Brockport will host a second Open House event on Nov. 9. 2024 for those who may have missed the first one.
