The Brockport Golden Eagles hosted St. John Fisher Friday and defeated the Cardinals in four sets. Playing an aggressive St. John Fisher team, Brockport was looking to start strong in their home opener.
“During practices we came in with the mindset of we want to come into the Empire 8 and make a statement,” defensive specialist Elsie Logan said. “Each practice has been very serious, and we were working for it.”
The Cardinals put up a good battle, winning the first set 25-13. Dominating offensively, St. John Fisher had 15 kills compared to Brockport’s seven in the first set.
In the second set, The Golden Eagles fed off the energy of the crowd. Alexis Sison led the way, leading the game with 12 kills. Brockport ended up winning the second set 25-21.
“Going into our first home and Empire 8 game there was a lot of nerves and definitely high tension,” Sison said. “We just had to reset and play our game how we know.”
Brockport took the lead after winning the third set 25-21, bringing the game to 2-1.
In the fourth set, both teams battled but were unable to find a substantial lead. Alenna Williamson, who was second on the team in kills with 11, scored three points in the final set. With the score at 23-18 and the Cardinals serving, Sison earned a point off an assist from Lauryn Forand. The next point it was Forand again, this time setting up Williamson, who earned the point and secured a Brockport win.
Brockport finished the game with a 3-1 victory on their home court. The Golden Eagles will hit the road and play against Nazareth University this Saturday.
