Brockport football’s Kyle Haettich was named Empire 8 Co-Defensive Player of the Week and was selected to the D3football.com Team of the Week for his two-interception performance in the Golden Eagles 31-17 win over Wilkes University last weekend.
“Being recognized for my efforts means a lot,” Haettich said. “It shows that our hard work is paying off. However, this achievement wouldn’t be possible without my teammates on the field and our coaching staff who have set us up for success.”
One of his two interceptions was a 93-yard pick-six with 2:48 remaining in the game. With Wilkes driving down the field trying to tie the game, Haettich read the play and made an adjustment before the ball was snapped, allowing him to make the interception.
“Ben Robinson and I recognized the play from the wide receiver alignment and the running back switching sides to the boundary,” Haettich said. “Once we alerted the team, everything flowed just as we practiced, allowing me to make the play.”
This is a different defense than Brockport has had in the past. Key contributors Raylens Boutin and Louie Usera graduated last year. Even with the losses of players on defense, Haettich is confident in his teammates’ abilities and is looking to see improvement.
“Losing key playmakers is tough, but we have athletes all over the field who can step it up,” Haettich said. “I see the potential for improvement. Our goal is to get better with each game, not to remain stagnant.”
With over a week off before their next game, Haettich knows the team will have to work hard and heal up to get the victory over conference rival St. John Fisher.
“We’ll continue our preparation,” Haettich said. “We have an extra week to heal, analyze film, correct our mistakes and get ready for the Courage Bowl against St. John Fisher.”
The Golden Eagles are currently 2-1 on the season and will look to stay on the winning track as they take on the St. John Fisher Cardinals in the 19th annual Courage Bowl on Saturday, Oct. 5. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
