Brockport field hockey faced the Roberts Wesleyan RedHawks Wednesday, in their Ovarian Cancer awareness game. The Golden Eagles defeated the RedHawks 5-1.
Brockport head coach Krista Archambeau highlighted her team’s preparation as a reason for their success.
“We go into every single game and worry about what we need to do in order to be successful and working on what we need to from the previous game,” Archambeau said.
The game started off slow with neither team able to find the back of the net. Brockport recorded four shots but were all stopped by Roberts goalkeeper Avery Richardson.
In the second quarter, the RedHawks would open scoring at the 27-minute mark. The Golden Eagles would answer shortly after, with Gianna Salerno making the score 1-1 going into halftime.
In the second half the Golden Eagles dominated the field, took control of the game and tested the RedHawk defense.
“After halftime we met with our team and talked about what we wanted to bring to the rest of the game and we capitalized on it,” Gianna Salerno said.
Samantha Choate broke the tie, scoring off an assist from Tiffany Andres, making the game 2-1. Later, Paige Thowe and Kelsey Zehr would score within five minutes of each other to give Brockport a commanding lead heading into the last four minutes of play. With less than two minutes remaining, Emmalee Moore found Kalena Eaton who scored to bring the game to 5-1.
Heading a strong defense that only faced two shots, Brockport goalkeeper Ella Buchanan was proud of her team’s effort.
“We came in hot; we were ready to play,” Buchanan said. “We had two really good practices this week and we worked on what we needed to work on, and it showed in our game.”
The Golden Eagles will take on the Houghton Highlanders this Saturday at 12 p.m.
