Brockport field hockey earned a dominating win Sunday over SUNY Morrisville, defeating the Mustangs 8-0 on senior day. Members of the senior class accounted for seven of Brockport’s goals.
“The seniors are the most special group I’ve probably ever coached in my 15 years of coaching,” head coach Krista Archambeau said. “They all give everything every single day at practice, and they couldn’t deserve it more.”
For the Golden Eagles, it was a dominating performance from start to finish. Brockport maintained possession of the ball and kept it on the Mustangs’ side of the field for the vast majority of the first period. They outshot Morrisville 17-0, with 11 of those shots being on goal in the first period alone.
Senior Paige Thowe scored her first goal of the season with a little over one minute left in the first period. Samantha Choate and Allison Greene picked up the assists, their first and fourth of the year, respectively.
The Golden Eagles would strike again early in the second period with senior Kelsey Zehr picking up her team-leading fourth goal of the season. Choate and Greene were once again credited with assists.
“Kelsey is one of our hardest workers and is one of the most selfless players,” Archambeau said. “I’m glad she’s getting recognition for all of her hard work.”
The seniors would continue to find the back of the net for Brockport. At the halfway point of the second period Tiffany Andres picked up her first goal of the year. Kalena Eaton was credited with her second assist of the season.
With just over a minute left in the half, Greene would give the Golden Eagles their third goal of the period and fourth goal of the game. The third goal of the season for the freshman took Brockport into the half with a commanding 4-0 lead.
Morrisville was once again not able to get a shot off as they were outshot 11-0 in the second period. That brought the total shot difference at the half to 28-0 in favor of Brockport.
Gianna Salerno got the Golden Eagles their season-high fifth goal of the game with just under four minutes left in the third period. This was the second goal of the year for the senior.
Not even four minutes passed before Brockport would extend their lead even further. This time it was Andres again; her second goal of the game and season.
“It made me super excited for the rest of the season… to get the two goal jitters out of the way,” Andres said. “We were really connected. I think the biggest thing was keeping our composure. I think we played together as a team, and we played as one today.”
Morrisville was finally able to get a shot off in the third period, but it was saved by goalie Ella Buchanan. That would be the only shot of the game for the Mustangs.
In the fourth period, Salerno would score again. Her second goal of the game and third goal of the season pushed the lead to 7-0. Sophia Jones was credited with her second assist of the year.
With just under a minute remaining, Thowe would get her second goal of the day.
“We’ve been struggling to finish, so finishing a lot on senior day, there’s no better feeling than that,” Thowe said. “We’re feeling good going into conference play next week.”
By the time the final horn sounded, Brockport had put up eight goals and 55 shots compared to Morrisville’s zero goals and one shot. A blowout in every sense of the word.
“Our goal today was to play our game for a full 60 minutes,” Archambeau said. “We really did that today.”
With the win, the Golden Eagles improved to 3-2 on the season. The Mustangs picked up their fourth loss of the year to move to 2-4.
The Golden Eagles will be in action again on Wednesday. They will take on the Ithaca Bombers at 7 p.m.
