The Brockport field hockey team lost to the No. 18 Cortland Red Dragons on Saturday 4-0. The Golden Eagles came into today’s game with a 6-3 record, fresh off a 9-0 win over Roberts Wesleyan University on Tuesday.
Cortland opened the scoring early, with midfielder Isabel Adams converting at the 5:25 mark. Brockport would concede again at the beginning of the second quarter, but were able to hold on until halftime, going into the break down 2-0.
After a defensive first half in which Cortland outshot Brockport 16-2, Brockport head coach Krista Archambeau said her team looked to play more offensively and create chances.
“We were sitting back on our heels and playing reactive to their fast ball movement,” Archambeau said.
In the second half, the Golden Eagles would create more scoring opportunities, taking five shots and earning five corners. However, Cortland would create chances of their own, scoring their third goal at the 33:13 mark.
Unfortunately for Brockport, defender Mary Young would leave the game with an injury 10 minutes into the third quarter, leaving the Golden Eagles without a key piece of their defense. Archambeau said she was happy with how her team responded to the injury break.
“Mary is a huge rock on our defense, so losing her was obviously really hard, but the rest of the team stepped up and played hard to fill her spot,” Archambeau said.
Cortland took advantage of her absence, scoring their fourth and final goal of the day with four minutes left to play. After 60 minutes, Cortland came out on top with a score of 4-0.
Brockport looks to turn it around when they take on St. John Fisher University next Wednesday at home in a non-conference matchup. That game will take place under the lights, with a start time of 7 p.m.
