The Brockport men’s basketball team walked into Schrader Gym in Geneseo on an eight-game winning streak and in control of the SUNYAC conference. They left in disbelief of how they let one slip away. Geneseo defeated the Golden Eagles 71-65 to drop Brockport to 15-4 on the season and 10-2 in conference play. It was the first road loss of the season for the Golden Eagles.
Heading into the first half locker room, Brockport was in control, leading 36-31. However, much like the first matchup between these two teams the Golden Eagles went ice cold in the second half. Shooting just 37% from the field, 11% from three, and 33% at the free throw line. In the final twenty minutes Brockport could not convert on their opportunities. Golden Eagles guard Mekhi Beckett shed some light on a rough shooting night
“Honestly, I feel like they didn’t really frustrate us I think we missed a lot of open lay ups we should’ve been able to make,” Beckett said.
Neither team recorded a made field goal in the final three minutes as Geneseo used free throws to get across the finish line. This was the second time this season Brockport struggled in the second half against Geneseo after scoring 17 points in their prior meeting, a 62-61 Golden Eagles victory.
The Knights were led by Harrison Dignan who scored a team leading 16 points and dished out six assists. Forward Cole Kattan also scored 16 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Beckett led the Green and Gold scoring 17 points and grabbing nine rebounds. David Grady III added a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
With the loss the Golden Eagles fell back into second place in the conference standings. Brockport will next be in action back at home as they host SUNY Potsdam Friday night.
