The Golden Eagles women’s and men’s swimming and diving team defeated SUNY Potsdam Saturday afternoon in their home opener. The men won 152-131, while the women defeated the Bears 193-67.
The women were dominant throughout the meet, winning 14/14 events. A blazing start of 4:19:51 in the 400-yard medley would be just the beginning of things to come for the Green and Gold. The team was made up of freshman Miya Vitale, Sam Whitman, Emily LeFrois-Heath and senior Sawyer Parker.
Vitale earned first place finishes in all her events. In her 200-yard backstroke, she finished in 2:21.34. Additionally, Vitale swam 2:10.57 in the 200-yard freestyle and 5:48.66 in the 500-yard freestyle.
Senior Nicole Orcutt placed first in the 1000 freestyle and 100 butterfly with times of 11:31:36 and 1:04:36. LeFrois-Heath finished her 400-yard individual medley in 4:49.14, just four seconds shy of the program record and five seconds from the pool record. She also excelled in the 200-yard butterfly earning a first-place finish with an impressive time of 2:21.97.
The Golden Eagles men’s team earned a close victory over Potsdam. In the 100-yard breaststroke, senior Oliver Dragojevic finished in 1:01.69, just a half a second before a Potsdam swimmer. Dragojevic did it again in the 200-yard breaststroke earning a first-place finish with a time of 2:22.03; this time two seconds before a Potsdam swimmer.
Senior Kurt Mueller placed first in both the 3-meter and 1-meter diving events with scores of 262.88 and 265.12. Sophomore Ken Watson placed second in both events.
Freshman Joe Keeney had a big outing earning two first place finishes in the meet. Keeney swam 59.23 in the 100-yard fly and 23.58 in the 50-yard free.
Brockport’s women’s swimming and diving team record is now 2-1 this season as the men pick up their first win to improve to 1-2. The Golden Eagles will head to Ohio for their Mid-Season Championship format meet at Oberlin Nov. 17 – 19.
