In wake of “Harry Potter” author JK Rowling’s transphobic comments, Brockport’s Harry Potter Club is collaborating with the Brockport Pride Association to host a fundraiser in support of transgender rights.
The “This Harry Potter Fan Supports Trans Rights” fundraiser will provide donations to the Trevor Project, a nonprofit that provides mental health support to LGBTQ+ youth. Stickers and pins are being sold for a minimum of $1. Felicia Cadawas, a member of Harry Potter Club, discusses the Trevor Project’s impact.
“Donating to the Trevor Project unfortunately does not erase the rampant transphobia that exists, but it does allow people who need support and resources from the Trevor Project to receive what they need,” Cadawas said.
Over the last two years, JK Rowling has published several Tweets and written pieces invalidating transgender experiences. Emily Russell, Harry Potter Club president, felt that she, as a Harry Potter fan, had the responsibility to socially and financially support the transgender community.
“Due to the current political climate and the statements made to the trans community, I thought this would be a good way for Harry Potter fans to unite and support the trans cause,” Russell said. “It’s often assumed that if you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’re against the trans community, and that isn’t the case. It [Harry Potter] is something a lot of people can gather around. It’s a childhood memory and it sucks that it’s been tarnished.”
Stickers and pins will be available in the Union Lounge until the end of the semester. Stop by, learn more and support the cause!
