BROCKPORT – A Wind Advisory was issued Sunday morning, March 6, with wind speeds as high as 47 mph and gusts as high as 61 mph, according to Weather Underground.
The wind speed hit a peak around 12:54 p.m. and started to die down Sunday evening, but the Wind Advisory was extended to Tuesday morning at 7 a.m., as many were without power across Brockport on Sunday.
SUNY Brockport sent out an alert to students Sunday afternoon at 1:17 p.m. regarding the power outage.
“Main Campus is experiencing intermittent power outages. Crews are evaluating and updates will be sent accordingly.”
According to Rochester Gas & Electric Corp., at least 20,000 customers were without power across Rochester Sunday due to the damage caused by the high wind and gust speeds.
Traffic signs were knocked down, trees and lamps were ripped out of the ground, some students’ cars were damaged from falling shingles and traffic cones had been launched across campus, one ending up submerged in the pond next to Eagle Hall.
Students complained Sunday afternoon about their ID card swipes not working in Eagle Hall, while others didn’t have any issues with theirs. At the time of the outage, one student had reportedly been stuck in an elevator.
At 6:08 p.m. Sunday, SUNY Brockport sent out another alert, updating students on the situation.
“Power has been restored to the main campus. The High Wind Warning has expired as of 6 p.m. Thank you.”
Monday’s gust peak was milder, at 31 mph around 10:45 p.m., compared to Sunday’s gust peak of 61 mph from around 12:54 p.m. to 1:54 p.m., according to Weather Underground.
Going into Tuesday afternoon, there are still at least a few without power in Clarkson, as well as a Small Craft Advisory in effect until 7 p.m. Tuesday.
