SUNY Brockport women’s soccer team hosted SUNY Oswego Friday, October 8 in a SUNYAC division showdown. Sydnee Smith led the way for the Golden Eagles scoring a goal and assisting on another to give Brockport the 2-1 victory.
Both teams had strong defense in the first half. SUNY Oswego was held to seven shots in the first half while Brockport only attempted five. It looked as if the game would be scoreless going into halftime until Smith scored a goal in the 38 minute. Smith’s third goal of the season was unassisted and came on a direct shot from around 20 yards out to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 lead.
Both teams followed up their impressive defensive first half performances with an equally impressive second half. The Golden Eagles only attempted three shots in the second half while limiting Oswego to four attempts. Kiley Longin broke the second half scoring drought with a goal in the 68 minute off the Smith assist.
Goalkeeper Kayla Usborne had another strong outing recording seven saves on the day. Usborne was on her way to recording her fourth shutout of the season until a penalty kick allowed Oswego to score their first goal of the game in the 71 minute resulting in a final score of 2-1.
Proud of his team’s performance this afternoon, head coach Idland was looking to see more of the same in the next days home matchup against SUNY Cortland at 1 p.m.
“I think we played a solid game today,” Idland said. “But more than anything it’s about consistency. So if we can bring that same level of energy tomorrow, we put ourselves in a good position to get a good result out of the game tomorrow which is all we’re looking for.”
The Golden Eagles lost their Saturday afternoon home game against Cortland 0-3. They’ll look to bounce back in their final home game of the season Tuesday, Oct. 12 against SUNY Canton.
