Throughout the entire month of October, SUNY Brockport is shedding light on National Disability Employment Awareness Month.
To gain a better insight into SUNY Brockport’s efforts in supporting National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), Director of Student Accessibility Services Nicole Musica shares her perspective on the college’s initiatives.
“So, we’re not planning any formal events within our office, but we are sharing and providing resources to students,” says Musica. “There’s an event in Albany on Tuesday, October 1st. It’s the 2024 dream symposium for Employment for Students with Disabilities.”
Although the school is not sponsoring the event out in Albany, students registered within the Office of Diversity and Inclusion should have received information about the event, including details on transportation options for those unable to provide their own.
In addition to advocating for the Albany symposium, the Student Accessibility Center has implemented significant improvements aimed at helping students with disabilities find career opportunities during their time at school and even post-graduation.
“We now have five people in our office, so we’re trying to do more. We also partnered with the Career Design Center. Partnering with them has given us better resources so that when we work with students, we’ll have stuff that’s specific for each student’s disability,” says Musica.
Through their partnership with the Career Design Center, the Student Accessibility Center is working to connect students with disabilities to internships tailored to their major and desired career path. The Career Design Center is focused on expanding opportunities for these students and helping them gain valuable job skills and experience through these internships.
Through these initiatives, SUNY Brockport is taking meaningful steps to support students with disabilities in their professional development. To gain a better understanding of this month, make sure to keep an eye on your email and reach out to the Student Accessibility Center with any questions.
