The SUNY Brockport English department welcomed Karin Lin-Greenberg as the first author to participate in the Fall 2024 season of the Brockport Writers Forum. Greenberg is an award-winning novelist known for her three published books, “You Are Here,” “Faulty Predictions” and “Vanished Stories.”
Greenberg read one of her published short stories to a crowd of students and faculty, followed up by a Q&A session and book autographs.
Greenberg’s biggest fulfillments in her career comes from her readers.
“When you are writing and really sinking into a project, you are kind of in that world of the project,” Greenberg said. “You can keep returning to it and building something, that to me is really exciting. It’s also exciting when people have read your book. I think this is a group of really smart readers. They see and interpret things that I didn’t even notice or see in my own work.”
In addition to being a writer, Greenberg also teaches at Siena College. Creating time to balance the two lifestyles is a big priority for her.
“Teaching can take up a lot of time, so it’s a matter of finding the writing time. I’ll tend to write a lot more during breaks, over the summers. During the year, I do some more business end of things like sending things out that don’t take that same creative energy,” Greenberg said.
The writing process and being an author comes with many highs and lows, something Greenberg is familiar with and offered advice on.
“Just keep going, be persistent,” Greenberg said. “You’re going to have some successes and have some failures. If this is something you want to do, you just keep working and keep trying to be better.”
Greenberg’s debut novel “You Are Here” received compliments from The Washington Post, Oprah Daily, Good Morning America, Elle, Publisher’s Weekly, Library Journal, Time Magazine and People magazine, among others.
The Writers Forum originally began in 1967. 57 years later, the program is still going strong with no end in sight. Greenberg is the first of five speakers participating in this semester’s Writers Forum. The series will also include Heidi Macpherson, Scott Chaskey, Alicia Elliot and K.E.
Macpherson is slated to be the next speaker in the Writer’s Forum series, taking place on Wednesday, Oct. 9, 2024.
