On Sept. 23, when traveling to compete at the New Paltz invitational, SUNY Brockport’s tennis team found bedbugs in their rooms. They had to drive hours before they could find another hotel the night before their match.
On the way to New Paltz, captains Eliza Gonzalez and Elizabeth Sirico looked up reviews of the hotel online and became skeptical.
“The reviews were only from three days before we got there, the titles were ‘roach motel, bedbugs, horrible experience and this is the worst hotel I ever stayed at,’” Sirico said.
The team didn’t want to go to that hotel but were convinced by their coach to give it a chance. Upon arrival the hotel clerk had to make copies of the coach’s ID and credit card. While the copies were being made, a hotel customer asked the team in the lobby if they had any bug spray. Still, they went up to their room to see what it was like despite the additional warning signs that made them feel uneasy.
“Immediately when we walked in the door there were bugs everywhere and there were spider webs. When we lifted the sheets on the bed there were more bugs under each layer, and we could even see eggs,” said Gonzalez.
