Colton Thorp earned E8 Defensive Player of the Week and DIII Football Team of the Week in Brockport's 48-14 victory over Alfred State.
Brockport Golden Eagles football sophomore defensive back Colton Thorp was named Empire 8 defensive player of the week after a lockdown performance in Brockport’s 48-14 victory over Alfred State. Thorp recorded one solo tackle and led the Golden Eagles with four pass breakups to earn a spot on the DIII Football National Team of the Week as well.
“It’s great to have supportive teammates posting about me earning the honor on their social media,” Thorp said. “That’s also how I found out that I got defensive player of the week.”
Thorp emphasized how important culture and his connection with his teammates are to being able to perform well on the field.
“It is important,” Thorp said. “In the locker room and in the weight room, having good friends and a formidable team culture supporting you makes a dramatic difference. On the field when you trust your teammates not just as a player but as friends you can just focus on doing your one-eleventh, and that is when plays come.”
With the award, Thorp expects to step into more of a leadership role, something the sophomore has not experienced before in his first year as a starter.
“Being a younger player, I did not really have much of a leadership role before,” Thorp said. “But after winning this award, I feel like my teammates are going to be looking at me more and respecting what I have to say. I think this will help me step into a leadership position and I am looking forward to taking on this responsibility.”
Thorp hopes to use this performance as the standard for the rest of the season and as motivation to keep on improving.
“This performance is now the standard, and making sure every game is like this for the rest of the season,” Thorp said. “This performance is going to help me with the rest of the season, and it gave me a lot of confidence. Even though I did not have a lot of experience, it showed me that if I just do my job and focus on her all-good things will happen.”
The Brockport Golden Eagles are 4-2 (2-1) on the season, sitting third in the Empire 8. Brockport hits the road to face off against SUNY Morrisville Saturday, October 25th. Kickoff is scheduled for 12 p.m.
